1. Summary
The article deals with globalization and
its relationship with culture. In other words, it refers to cultural
globalization, and the author first explains cultural globalization through
each concept of "globalization" and "culture."
First, globalization is a network in which
interconnectivity of economic, cultural, etc. develops rapidly, and is a
multidimensional process. In the category of globalization, we should not give
any advantage because the boundaries are ambiguous.
Secondly, culture is the context in which
events can be interpreted meaningfully. Culture has the effect of globalization
and is created and formed at the same time.
In other words, cultural globalization
involves a 'reflection' in which so many individual actions are systemically
integrated.
The article explains both utopian and
dystopian interpretations of the consequences of globalization.
There is speculation that the consequences
of globalization will eventually result in a single world. This assumption may
seem plausible, as some aspects of globalization can be seen the effect of
"integration."
But the connection of the world does not
necessarily mean integration. The author judges that the basis of these
thinkers is that they have nationalistic views. All we have to be careful about
is defining Western culture as the culture of the world.
It is time to rethink the traditional
meaning of culture. The concept of traditional culture implicitly linked
'territoriality or region' to the specificity of culture. But the concept of
"deterritorialization" breaks down the framework of the traditional
concept. In other words, deterritorialization comes to our daily lives with
"connectivity" beyond the distance. Paradoxically, this
deterritorialization could rather enhance the specificity of the area. The
place where we are treading is all maintaining a high level of cultural
originality despite the power of globalization.
So, how should cultural globalization be
defined in globalization? By solving the problem of the formation of cultural
identity, we can take the path of globalization. As I said earlier, those who
threaten cultural identity tend to think of cultural identity as a meaning of
'own.' But identity is not a property. It is a structure. What they call
"uniformity" is more reasonable to be used as a whole human being
than to be confined within a country or region.
2. What was interesting/What did you learn
I first came across the concept of
'deterritorialization' in this article. Reading the text, I was also interested
in the fact that the current cultural globalization is quite Western. So,
naturally, if the current cultural globalization is Westernistic, we have come
to think about where we should go. The 'identity of culture' from the
perspective of 'deterritorialization' and 'global citizenship,' which was
presented as the answer to the article, allowed me to see the world in a wider
variety of ways.
3. Discussion point
Just as last year's keyword was 'fake
news,' what do you think is the keyword for future globalization? I'd like to
talk to you about this.
I think the 'world citizen' ritual that we
are all the same human beings and the 'pluralism' that recognizes that there
can be various cultures in the world are important people's consciousness in
future globalization.
